Time For Bed

Dreams are the tiny seeds,
From which beautiful tomorrows grow.

What a lovely way to say goodnight.

When I was a little girl we had our rituals before going to bed. We'd get all washed and brush our teeth, Mom would brush my hair and and Scrabblebuff 's and then we'd kneel down to say our prayers. Since I was 6 years older, I had a list of prayers that needed to be learned so those were what I'd say until I'd memorized the words to each one and then go on to the next one.
Lori would whisper her "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep..."

After that we'd do the blesses. "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, through the brothers, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. At some point, we each realized we could stretch out bedtime a little by adding to the list, God bless Sister Maureen. God bless President Eisenhower. God bless Princess Grace, God bless.... Mom and Dad were on to us and about then they would wrap it up with God bless everybody else. Baby sitters usually didn't catch on until we got to God bless The Lennon Sisters and God bless Howdy Doody.

Once we'd finished our prayers, it was time for a story. We had a big fat book that Daddy would read from called 365 Bedtime Stories. (he and Mummy alternated who read to the girls, the other would be reading to the boys) Of course, the book was designed so kids couldn't beg for one more story because then you'd run out before the end of the year. I do not remember a single one of the stories but those were the very BEST times.

After the story was over, we were tucked in, kissed, and they would put on our LP with soft classical music at a barely audible level. It was usually Leonard Bernstein concerts for children but never Peter and the Wolf which gave Scrabblebuff nightmares. Then the folks would head out to the hallway

"Good Night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite."

Shhhhh.....

See ya down the road,
Yarntangler
